Scott: “The intent of The Realm Way is to peel back the curtain and give people context for our wines and what makes Realm unique. It captures our journey as we know it so far, and we hope it offers meaningful insights into the land where our wines are grown and the people who craft it.”
We could not be more pleased to announce the arrival of The Realm Way, Third Edition.
While not a departure from previous editions, the Third Edition expands significantly on themes laid out in the first two, with more content including essays, photos, detailed maps and illustrations. Following Scott’s Introduction is The Compass, where we lay out Realm’s vision and core values as well as define the Realm Paradox and our identity as practical dreamers. This section is enriched with clever illustrations by award winning illustrator Craig Frazier, who somehow manages to convey abstract themes (how do you draw “paradox?”) with deceptively simple line drawings.
Scott: “Craig’s figures always seem to be learning and discovering. His work conveys an intellectual yet whimsical mindset that fits with Realm.”
The updated Sense of Place section reflects not only our expanding portfolio of Estate properties, but our understanding of Realm’s place in the broader context of Napa Valley. For this reason, we invited Karen MacNeil and Antonio Galloni, both esteemed writers and critics, to contribute essays about the valley, and Scott sat down with vineyard managers David and Matteo Abreu for a rare conversation about Napa Valley’s past, present and future. We hope these additional voices bring more richness and texture to The Realm Way.
To give readers a deeper understanding of our Estate vineyards and wines we offer reflections on the characteristics of each property accompanied by detailed maps of the vineyards and locations within Napa Valley. We love maps, and to say these renditions were a labor of love may be an understatement.
Leslie Sullivan, Director of Realm X: “The maps represent an amalgamation of work by Antonio Galloni, known for his Vinous maps, as well as research by a cartographer and a graphic designer who overlaid them with aerial photos. By including a high level of detail and specificity, we hope they convey the distinctiveness of each site and how that translates to our wines.”
Sense of Taste is new, seeking to define how Realm’s taste has evolved not only as it relates to our wines, but how taste is reflected in our labels as well as the architecture, sculptures, paintings and other art and artists with which we surround ourselves. As we have matured, so has our discernment of what makes great wine – and art – though we realize both are highly subjective. As you’ll read, it is having a point of view that is important to us. Concluding with photos and words about the two contemporary artists who painted our Cave of Dreams at the Moonracer Estate, Sense of Taste is a fitting segue to The Wines section, where each wine in the portfolio is highlighted with an explanation of its label. The Realm Way concludes with The Journey, a condensed version of the “Chapters” section of our website, and a Gallery with additional photos.
Leslie: “One of the challenging aspects of The Realm Way was figuring out when to put a pin in it. Realm is always moving and growing, there are always more stories to tell, but at some point you have stop and let the book go to print. It’s not unlike a wine which must be bottled. You share where you are at a moment in time.”
A project of this magnitude is only possible through the work of a dedicated team, and we’d like to recognize Robert Ross and his design colleagues at RossMadrid, a boutique creative agency out of Los Angeles. Robert worked with us on the first two editions of The Realm Way, which is to say that by now, Realm has a long relationship with him. His lavish attention to detail matches ours to a T, and his sensibility, great eye, energy and willingness to consider crazy ideas can be seen on every page.
Robert: “It isn’t often you get to work with clients on a project like this, and I’m guessing the attention to detail they applied to The Realm Way – from the maps to the photos to each and every word and illustration – is the same they apply to their wines. Realm has a clear vision of who they are and who they want to be, they are deliberate in everything they do. That’s the mark of a successful endeavor.”
Initially we will share The Realm Way, Third Edition with our most tenured members and plan to make it available to a wider audience over time.
